Mastering the Pen Tool: A Designer's Rite of Passage
The Pen Tool is notoriously frustrating for beginners. But once you master it, it unlocks infinite possibilities in Illustrator and Photoshop. It is the single most important tool in vector design.
The Rule of Few Nodes
The biggest mistake beginners make is clicking too many times, creating dozens of anchor points. This results in bumpy, ugly curves. The rule is: use the absolute minimum number of points necessary to create the shape.
Mastering Bezier Handles
Hold Alt (Option) to break a handle and create a sharp corner. Hold Shift to constrain the handle to 45-degree increments. Pull the handles about 1/3 of the distance to the next point for the smoothest curve.
Conclusion
Play 'The Bezier Game' online for 30 minutes a day. Within a week, the Pen Tool will feel like an extension of your hand.
