Asymmetry in Design: Breaking the Rules
Symmetry is safe, predictable, and comforting. Asymmetry is dynamic, energetic, and modern. If you want your designs to stand out, you need to learn how to balance asymmetry.
Visual Weight
Asymmetry works through visual weight. A large, light-colored circle on the left side of a canvas can be perfectly balanced by a tiny, dark-colored, dense square on the right side.
Creating Tension
Perfectly centered text is boring. Pushing your text to the absolute edge of the margin creates tension. The viewer's eye is drawn to the negative space on the opposite side, creating a sense of movement.
Conclusion
Learn the grid first. Once you know how to create perfect symmetry, start breaking the grid purposefully to create striking, modern compositions.
