The Psychology of Curved vs Sharp Edges in UI

Look at your iPhone apps. Almost every button, card, and image is heavily rounded. There is a deep psychological reason why tech giants moved away from sharp corners.

The Danger of Sharpness

In nature, sharp objects represent danger (teeth, thorns, blades). Our brains subconsciously register 90-degree angles as slightly threatening. A button with sharp corners feels abrasive and less inviting to click.

The Friendliness of Curves

Curves represent safety (clouds, pebbles, human faces). A rounded button (border-radius: 8px to 16px) feels friendly, modern, and tactile. It draws the eye naturally to the center of the shape where the text is.

Conclusion

If you are designing a high-end luxury brand (like a law firm or a watchmaker), sharp corners convey seriousness and precision. For consumer tech, always go rounded.
