The Importance of Visual Hierarchy in Graphic Design

Design isn't just about making things look pretty. It is about controlling the viewer's eye. If someone looks at your design and doesn't know where to look first, your design has failed. This is where Visual Hierarchy comes in.

Size and Scale

The simplest way to establish hierarchy is through size. The largest element on the page will naturally attract the most attention. Use this for your main headline or primary subject.

Color and Contrast

Warm colors (reds, oranges) advance toward the eye, while cool colors (blues, greens) recede. A bright red button on a white background commands attention because of the high contrast.

Negative Space

Amateur designers try to fill every pixel with content. Professional designers use empty space (negative space) to isolate important elements. Space gives your design room to breathe and makes the content feel premium.
