Color Theory in UI/UX: How to Design for Emotion
Colors aren't just decorative; they are psychological triggers. When designing a user interface, the colors you choose directly influence how a user feels about the product before they even read a single word.
The Psychology of Primary Colors
Blue: Trust, security, and calm. This is why almost all banks and social networks (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter) use blue.
Red: Urgency, excitement, and danger. Great for clearance sales or error states, but use it sparingly.
Green: Growth, wealth, and health. Perfect for financial apps or eco-friendly products.
The 60-30-10 Rule
To create a balanced UI, follow the 60-30-10 rule. 60% of your interface should be a dominant neutral color (like white or dark gray), 30% a secondary color, and 10% an accent color (for buttons and CTAs).
Conclusion
Don't pick colors because they "look nice." Pick them because they align with the emotion you want your user to feel.
